Franchise deep dive

The Jurassic Park universe

Cast, key dinosaurs, and — where the franchise invented one — exactly how each genetically engineered hybrid was supposedly built, film by film, oldest to newest.

Jurassic Park

1993
Director:
Steven Spielberg
Cast:
Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Samuel L. Jackson, Wayne Knight
Key dinosaurs:
Tyrannosaurus rex, Velociraptor, Brachiosaurus, Dilophosaurus, Triceratops, Gallimimus

Hybrid explained — How the dinosaurs were made (in-universe)

InGen scientists extract dinosaur blood preserved inside mosquitoes trapped in amber. Where the ancient genome has gaps, it's patched with DNA from frogs — a plot detail that becomes important later, since some frog species can spontaneously change sex in a single-sex population, explaining how the park's all-female dinosaurs start breeding without permission.

Trivia: The film's Velociraptors are built to the size of Deinonychus, a close relative roughly twice the size of the real (turkey-sized) Velociraptor mongoliensis — a deliberate creative choice, made before some of the largest raptor species were even described.

The Lost World: Jurassic Park

1997
Director:
Steven Spielberg
Cast:
Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Vince Vaughn, Pete Postlethwaite, Richard Attenborough
Key dinosaurs:
Tyrannosaurus rex (adult pair and infant), Stegosaurus, Pachycephalosaurus, Compsognathus

Trivia: Introduces "Site B" — Isla Sorna, the offshore facility where InGen actually bred and raised its dinosaurs before shipping them to the show park on Isla Nublar. It's Spielberg's first-ever sequel to one of his own films.

Jurassic Park III

2001
Director:
Joe Johnston
Cast:
Sam Neill, William H. Macy, Téa Leoni, Alessandro Nivola
Key dinosaurs:
Spinosaurus, Pteranodon, Velociraptor

Trivia: The first film built from an original story rather than a Michael Crichton novel. Its Spinosaurus-versus-Tyrannosaurus fight was controversial with paleontologists — real Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus never coexisted; they lived roughly 30 million years and an ocean apart.

Jurassic World

2015
Director:
Colin Trevorrow
Cast:
Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D'Onofrio, BD Wong
Key dinosaurs:
Velociraptor pack ("Blue" and siblings), Mosasaurus, Ankylosaurus, Apatosaurus

Hybrid explained — Indominus rex

The park's first fully custom "new species," engineered to reverse slumping ticket sales. Its genome splices Tyrannosaurus, Velociraptor, Carnotaurus, Giganotosaurus, Majungasaurus, and Therizinosaurus DNA with cuttlefish and tree frog genes for thermal camouflage, and pit viper genes for heat-sensing.

Trivia: BD Wong's Dr. Henry Wu is the only human character to appear across every film from the 1993 original through Dominion (2022).

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom

2018
Director:
J.A. Bayona
Cast:
Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Rafe Spall, Toby Jones, James Cromwell, Justice Smith
Key dinosaurs:
Baryonyx, Stygimoloch, Sinoceratops, Carnotaurus

Hybrid explained — Indoraptor

Dr. Wu's weaponized follow-up to Indominus rex, built on the same genome with a heavier dose of Velociraptor DNA. The plan was to use Owen's imprinted raptor "Blue" as a genetic mother so the Indoraptor would inherit her trained obedience — the film's writers confirmed, despite fan theories, that it contains no human DNA.

Trivia: Ends with dinosaurs escaping into the mainland for the first time in the franchise — a single Compsognathus, sold at a black-market auction, gets loose from a private estate.

Jurassic World Dominion

2022
Director:
Colin Trevorrow
Cast:
Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, BD Wong, DeWanda Wise
Key dinosaurs:
Giganotosaurus, Therizinosaurus, Pyroraptor, Atrociraptor, Moros intrepidus, Quetzalcoatlus

Trivia: First film to reunite the 1993 trio — Neill, Dern, and Goldblum — as full co-leads rather than cameos, alongside the Jurassic World cast. Its central threat is gene-edited giant locusts, not a hybrid dinosaur, tying the plot to real anxieties about CRISPR gene-editing technology.

Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous

2020–2022 (series)
Director:
DreamWorks Animation for Netflix
Cast:
Voices of Paul-Mikél Williams, Jenna Ortega, Sean Giambrone, Kausar Mohammed
Key dinosaurs:
Compsognathus, Baryonyx, Ankylosaurus

Hybrid explained — Scorpios rex

An earlier, unstable Henry Wu hybrid predating even Indominus rex, splicing Carnotaurus, Velociraptor, and Tyrannosaurus DNA with tree frog, pit viper, and scorpionfish genes — the last giving it a venomous, spine-loaded tail. It was deemed too dangerous and kept in cryogenic storage.

Trivia: Set during and after the original Jurassic World's 2015 collapse, following six teenagers — the "Nublar Six" — who go on to headline the follow-up series Chaos Theory as young adults.

Jurassic World Rebirth

2025
Director:
Gareth Edwards
Cast:
Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Rupert Friend
Key dinosaurs:
Titanosaurus, Mosasaurus, and other survivors confined to a narrow equatorial habitat band

Trivia: A soft reset for the franchise: most dinosaurs have died off outside a narrow equatorial band where the original cloning environment persists, driving the plot's need to retrieve DNA from the three largest surviving species.

All hybrid genetics described above are fictional plot devices from the films — none of these creatures exist or could exist. Real dinosaur genera get the same rigor as everything else on this site over in the full index.
