Barnum Brown, born in Kansas in 1873 and named for the circus showman P.T. Barnum, joined the American Museum of Natural History in 1897 and spent the next six decades in the field, becoming what AMNH still calls the greatest dinosaur collector in history.[3][1]
In 1902, working the badlands of Hell Creek, Montana, Brown recovered the first partial skeleton ever identified as Tyrannosaurus rex. Six years later, at Big Dry Creek nearby, he found a second, far more complete specimen -- the fossil that let Henry Fairfield Osborn formally describe and name the species in 1905 and that anchored AMNH's T. rex mount for decades after. Beyond Montana, Brown collected across Canada, Cuba, India, Ethiopia, Greece, and Patagonia, and more than 50 of the specimens now on display at AMNH passed through his hands.[1][2]
Brown's fieldwork carried an unpublicized second layer. During the Great Depression, museum budgets tightened enough that he struck a deal with the Sinclair Oil Company, which funded several of his expeditions in exchange for his review of the company's dinosaur-themed promotional booklets -- the same period in which Sinclair adopted a sauropod as its filling-station mascot. Separately, oil companies paid Brown directly to apply his geological training toward locating petroleum deposits during his travels. Then during World War II, after being made to retire from AMNH against his wishes, Brown went to work for the U.S. war effort in Washington, D.C., feeding the Office of Strategic Services -- the wartime precursor to the CIA -- geographic intelligence on regions including the Aegean Islands to help plan Allied invasion routes. None of this came to light publicly until decades after his death, when his daughter Frances and museum archives revealed the extent of it.[4][5][6]
Brown had no formal doctorate and never held a conventional academic post, working instead as a museum field scientist for his entire career -- a reminder that some of paleontology's most consequential finds came from persistent fieldwork rather than a university lab. He remained associated with AMNH until his death in 1963.[1]
