Dromaeosaurids are built for speed and precision: a stiffened tail for balance, long grasping hands, and a distinctive retractable sickle claw on each foot's second digit, held clear of the ground while running and likely used to grip or slash prey. Multiple genera are preserved with direct evidence of feathers, and the family's skeletal anatomy sits close enough to early birds that dromaeosaurids are routinely used as a comparison point for how flight-related traits evolved.
The family spans a long stretch of the Mesozoic, from the Late Jurassic into the very end of the Cretaceous, with its greatest diversity in North America and Asia. Velociraptor -- much smaller and more thickly feathered in life than its film depictions -- remains the most famous member, alongside larger genera like Deinonychus, whose 1964 discovery helped launch the modern view of dinosaurs as active, bird-like animals, and Utahraptor, one of the largest dromaeosaurids known.
